JOB SUMMARY
This position assists in the supervision and operation of a school system police department involved in protecting life and property; policy and law enforcement; and prevention and investigation of crime.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This job has supervisory responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Supervises Campus Police Officers assigned to his/her school zone.
- Conducts inspection of school zone personnel and vehicles.
- Performs duties of a Campus Police Officer as required.
- Prepares or supervises the preparation of necessary reports or records related to police activities and reviews reports prepared and submitted by subordinates.
- Facilitates on-the-job training through Field Training Officers assigned to his/her school zone; reports training-related performance issues through the chain of command.
- Instructs and advises Campus Police Officers in patrol work or in the practices and procedures to be followed in all cases of law enforcement, crime prevention, traffic control, and related activities.
- Handles disciplinary actions up to and including oral reprimands; relieves a subordinate of duty when circumstances warrant immediate action.
- Maintains supplies for an assigned school zone.
- Supervises Campus Police Officers at crime scenes.
- Monitors emergency calls and responds to provide direction, supervision, assistance, and emergency services.
- Obeys and observes the campus police department's policies, rules, and procedures, and the Bibb County Board of Education.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or State Approved High School Equivalency; Associate’s degree is highly desired. Five (5) years of law enforcement experience with at least two (2) years in a school setting, and prior training in law enforcement. Some experience in a leadership position is preferred. Or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of policies, practices, and procedures of law enforcement.
- Knowledge of investigative procedures.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws.
- Knowledge of management and supervision techniques.
- Extensive knowledge of BCSD campuses and surrounding geographic areas.
- Skill in the use of firearms and other police equipment.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with administrators, teachers, students, and the general public.
- Ability to interpret, apply, and establish rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to carry and effectively use firearms and other assigned equipment.
- Ability to give orders and gain compliance from assigned personnel.
- Ability to make decisions under pressure.
- Ability to control, motivate, and train personnel to perform their duties safely, efficiently, and purposefully.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
- Ability to think clearly and take effective action in emergencies.
CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Georgia P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training) certification must be obtained within one (1) year of employment.
A current and valid Georgia driver's license is required.
An extensive background investigation, which includes a polygraph test, and a drug screening will be conducted before employment.
Random drug screenings will be conducted after employment.
Physical agility tests are conducted regularly after employment.
